Our Physical Education curriculum is designed to inspire all students to embrace active, healthy lifestyles and to recognize the lifelong value of physical activity. Our intent is to create a curriculum that promotes physical, mental, and social well-being while fostering a love for sport, fitness, and teamwork.

We aim to provide students with the skills, techniques, and strategies needed to excel in a wide range of physical activities, encouraging confidence and mastery in sport and fitness.

We also feel passionate about students gaining key life skills such as resilience, determination, leadership, and collaboration through structured lessons and extracurricular programs.

Physical Education at Haywood Academy is an integral part of our curriculum and plays a significant role in supporting students’ physical development, personal wellbeing, and character education. The department aims to ensure that all students develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to lead healthy, active lives. 

The Physical Education Department aims to promote positive attitudes towards physical activity and sport by providing engaging, inclusive, and appropriately challenging learning experiences. The department is committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of starting point or ability, is able to make strong progress and experience success within Physical Education.

Sportsmanship will be at the centre of all teaching aspects within our subject. Students will be encouraged to value and respect one another’s ability, self-confidence and self-esteem, and promote the Academy in the community through sport.

The PE department also offers a range of extracurricular activities, clubs, and competitive opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom and support students’ personal development and engagement with school life.

Our comprehensive extra-curricular programme is inclusive of all skill levels and our sports teams strive for excellence and across multiple sports have been successful in city wide competitions. 

The Physical Education Department provides a broad, balanced, and progressive curriculum that allows students to experience a wide range of physical activities, including team sports, individual activities, fitness-based learning, and creative movement.  

The curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all students

  • Build the skills and confidence required to perform effectively across a wide range of physical activities
  • Maintained physical activity throughout their whole school career for sustained periods of time
  • Participation in competitive sports and activities inside and afterschool activities 
  • Students are encouraged to reflect on their performance, set personal goals, and take responsibility for their own progress

Overall, Physical Education at Haywood Academy plays a key role in supporting whole-school priorities around wellbeing, character education, and personal development. By the time students leave the school, they are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and positive attitudes necessary to make informed choices about their health and to sustain an active lifestyle throughout their lives.
