DANCE CURRICULUM

Year 7Elements of Dance
Students will learn the four elements and foundations of dance; Actions, Dynamics, Space and Relationships.

They will then apply these to practical movement tasks to produce a final choreographic piece considering a stimulus.
Music Television Videos Through the Ages
Students will continue developing the elements of dance when watching being inspired by iconic music videos.

They will look at the deeper connections to our British values that interlink the videos and the positive impacts they have had on societal issues.
World Dance Styles
Students will study dance styles from around the world focuses on stylistic qualities and choreographic development techniques.

They will learn 5 different styles; Bharatanatyam, Samba, Flamenco, Street Dance and Step Dance, and then consider how to improve phrases using development techniques.
Year 8Dance Through the Decades
Students will look at how dance has developed through time and learn about styles and qualities of dance from each decade starting in the 1920’s.

They will focus on recapping the elements of dance and choreographic development techniques whilst starting to use their own creativity to create additional motifs.
Movie Musicals
Students will learn professional inspired choreography from famous movie musicals and develop their performance skills as well as consolidating all knowledge learnt to date.
Props in Dance
Students will gain a deeper understanding of dance analysis and critique the use of props within dance.

They will use this feedback to understand how to effectively utilise a prop in dance and devise a final short piece using a prop of their choice.
Year 9Introduction to Key Skills and Styles in Dance
Students will be introduced to technical abilities in practical lessons, learn how to effectively analyse dance work and learn repertoire working towards a production at the end of term. They will study the styles of; jazz, contemporary, commercial and hip hop.

They will deepen their understand by studying professional works and back grounds within these genres of dance in both a practical and theoretical form.
Contemporary Dance and the Media
Students will focus the style of contemporary dance and how it has progressed over time. They will study key practitioners within contemporary, the impact they had on the dance style and how the media and society has developed dance.

They will learn technically challenging motifs and develop these for their assessment.
Devising Dance
Students will use the skills learnt to use their own creative skills in order to choreograph a dance piece based on a brief. They will experience the entire choreographic process and devise a piece considering how productions progress from ‘page to stage.’

They will gain knowledge on how stage and film dance pieces are generated and work as a group to pitch and produce a piece of their own.
Year 10Introductions to BTEC Dance and Key Skills
Students will gain a deeper understanding of the BTEC Tech Award in dance and start to learn and develop key skills that will contribute to the course.

They will look at technical, creative and theoretical dance skills. The main focus will be on preparing for component one with a focus on writing and literacy skills and analysing dance.
Component One – Exploring the Performing Arts
Learners will develop their understanding of the performing arts by examining the work of performing arts professionals and the processes used to create performance.

They will investigate how professional performance or production work is created and demonstrate understanding of the skills, techniques and approaches used by professionals to create performance/production work.
Component One / Component Two Preparation
Component One finishes Students will spend the remainder of this term practicing technical and performance skills in preparation for their component two task in year 11.
Year 11Component Two – Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts
Learners will develop their performing arts skills and techniques through the reproduction of dance repertoire as performers.

They will understand the rehearsal process, apply skills and techniques in a performance and review own development and application of performance skills.
Component Three – Responding to a Brief
Learners will be given the opportunity to work as part of a group to contribute to a workshop performance as a performer in response to a brief and stimulus. Students will apply skills learnt prior to this component to understand how to respond to a brief, select and develop skills and techniques, apply skills and techniques in a workshop performance and evaluate the development process and outcome.
