Sustainability

Our sustainable school:

At Haywood Academy, we recognise that the future of our planet depends on the choices we make today. Sustainability is at the heart of our vision for a better tomorrow—an approach that focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

As a community, Haywood Academy is committed to cultivating an eco-conscious mindset among our students, staff, and the wider community. By embedding sustainability into our everyday actions, we aim to inspire positive change, promote environmental stewardship, and empower our students to become proactive global citizens.

Our values:

1) Sustainability: We aim to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, fostering sustainable practices in our school and community.

2) Education and Awareness: We believe in educating ourselves and others about environmental issues and solutions to inspire informed, impactful action.

3) Collaboration: We value working together with other clubs, students, and the local community to amplify our efforts and make a broader impact on environmental well-being.

4) Respect for Nature: We honour and respect the natural world, understanding that its health is directly linked to the well-being of all living creatures, including humans.

5) Inclusion: We embrace diversity and encourage all students to participate, recognizing that collective action requires a variety of perspectives and voices.

Our Eco Club (Green council):

“Our school Eco Club meets bi-weekly to ensure consistent and effective progress on our environmental initiatives. By meeting every two weeks, we allow enough time for club members to work on projects, gather information, and collaborate on ideas outside of meetings. Meeting regularly ensures we stay on track with our goals, whether it’s organizing events, conducting sustainability campaigns, or making positive changes in our school and community.”

Our Green Council has begun busily planning activities to:

· Increase recycling

· Reduce litter

· Produce food and reduce food waste

· Produce habitats/animal environments

· Take part in a “Walk to School Week”

· Participate in Earth Day activities

· Increase awareness about global environments and human impacts on sustainability

· Run educational workshops about planting,

seeds and growing your own food

· Clothing drives to promote reusing items

· Environmental Awareness Campaigns: Create posters, videos, and social media campaigns to inform the school community about environmental issues and how they can help

· Incorporate Sustainability into the Curriculum: Work with teachers to include more sustainability topics in the curriculum or start
