Careers at Haywood Academy

Careers education, information and guidance (CEIAG) is a priority at Haywood Academy.

We believe all our students should be equipped with the information, knowledge and understanding needed to make informed decisions at key transition points in their school life and beyond. We are committed to ensuring the ARCH values of ‘Aspiration, Respect, Community and Hard work’ and the careers guidance received by students helps them to develop these values.

In 2017, the government launched its new careers strategy, placing the Gatsby Benchmarks at its heart. The Gatsby Foundation produced these new guidelines for careers provision following research by Sir John Holman to establish the best way to ensure young people in schools received the best careers education. The careers provision at Haywood Academy is on target to meet all 8 Gatsby Benchmarks by the end of the year and the Academy is currently working towards the Quality in Careers Standard.

Measuring Impact of the Academy Careers Programme
The Academy uses Compass+ in partnership with the Careers and Enterprise Company to monitor and evaluate provision regularly against the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks. We also gather feedback from students, teachers, external careers advisors and other stakeholders on a regular basis following events. Together, these procedures allow the Academy to make continual improvements to the impact of the careers programme.

City College
City College supports students and provides them with opportunities post 16, whether they wish to progress to University, or enter the world of work. Teachers work across Haywood academy and City College this ensures that all curriculum areas are fully up to date on Post 16 information to support students decision making.

City College also works closely with Haywood Academy to support all students’ options post 16 and ensure they have a relevant and inspiring curriculum offer. Also that Academy students have opportunities through year 10 and 11 to develop wider employability skills such as communication and teamwork during sessions within the College environment.

University Partnerships

Haywood Academy works with an increasing number of local employers to ensure our students get exposure to industry professionals and high quality experience of the work place to help inform their future pathways. We have many business partnerships used in recent years that students have had direct workplace interaction with. For example a Maths project developed and delivered with Seddon and an English project with Stoke City.

To ensure continuous improvement of the Careers Curriculum we are always looking for professionals to work with us, based on student voice and labour market opportunities in varying and dynamic fields. If you would like to be involved in the work we do with careers please contact Miss Morgan (Careers Lead) who will be keen to involve you in developing opportunities for students and employer centred events.

Raising Participation Age (RPA)
It is now Government Policy that all young people will be expected to continue in education or training. This is called raising the Participation Age (RPA)
What does this mean?

Young people who complete Year 11 will continue learning until at least their 18 Birthday (Year 12, Year 13). This does not mean young people must stay on at school. They can choose from one of the following:

  • Full time education: School Sixth Form or college
  • Apprenticeship
  • Foundation Learning offered at local training providers
  • Part-time education or training if a young person is employed, self-employed or volunteering full- time (defined as 20 hours or more a week)

Who can help?
Careers Guidance Service – Haywood Academy has a Careers Advice and Guidance Team who are employed by Stoke on Trent City Council. The Careers Advisers offer an unbiased careers advice and guidance service for students. They help students to think through their ideas and weigh up the pros and cons of different options.
