If you are currently a Year 6 student, or a parent\/carer of a Year 6 student who will be joining the Haywood community in September 2027, the information below will guide you through every stage of the transition from primary school to Haywood Academy.<\/p>\n

Starting secondary school is one of the most important milestones in a child’s educational journey. At Haywood Academy, we recognise that this can be both an exciting and sometimes daunting time for students and their families. That is why we place great importance on ensuring every student experiences a positive and successful transition, helping them to feel confident, supported and excited about the opportunities ahead.<\/p>\n
Our transition programme is carefully designed to help students settle into life at Haywood, build new friendships and develop the skills and qualities needed to thrive both academically and personally. Through a range of transition events and activities, students become familiar with our expectations, routines and school community before they join us in September.<\/p>\n
At the heart of everything we do are our core values. We encourage students to be kind, respectful and aspirational, while also developing creativity, resilience, self-belief and a willingness to embrace new challenges. These qualities help our students grow into confident learners who are ready to make the most of every opportunity.<\/p>\n
From the very beginning of their Haywood journey, we are committed to nurturing these characteristics so that every student feels valued, supported and equipped to achieve their full potential and become the very best version of themselves.<\/p>\n

Transition Timeline<\/h2>\n
Before Joining Haywood Academy in September 2027<\/p>\n
Our transition programme begins well before students start Year 7, giving us the opportunity to get to know each child as an individual and helping them feel confident, reassured and well supported as they make the move to secondary school.<\/p>\n
April 2027<\/p>\n
We begin gathering important information from primary schools to help us plan an effective and personalised transition for every student.<\/p>\n
This includes:<\/p>\n
\n
Collecting key academic, pastoral and safeguarding information.<\/li>\n
Liaising with primary schools to identify any additional support needs.<\/li>\n
Beginning preparations for students who may benefit from enhanced transition support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
May and June 2027<\/p>\n
During this period, members of our transition team, including Ms Hancock (SENCO), Mrs Ryder (Safeguarding Lead) and Mr Courts (Transition Leader), will meet with Year 6 teachers and primary school staff to discuss students and their individual transition needs.<\/p>\n
We will also visit primary schools to meet students, answer questions and begin building positive relationships before they join us in September.<\/p>\n
June 2027<\/p>\n
Information will be sent to parents and carers detailing:<\/p>\n

Induction Day arrangements.<\/li>\n
Induction Evening information.<\/li>\n
September start arrangements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Additional support opportunities will include:<\/p>\n

Individual student visits (where required).<\/li>\n
SEND transition visits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
July 2027 – Induction Days<\/p>\n
Our Induction Days provide students with the opportunity to experience life at Haywood Academy and begin their journey as valued members of our school community.<\/p>\n
The aims of our induction programme are:<\/p>\n

To establish high expectations and introduce students to the Haywood Way.<\/li>\n
To provide a warm welcome to the Haywood community.<\/li>\n
To help students build positive relationships with their Form Tutor and fellow students, ensuring a smooth and successful transition into Year 7.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

Activities During Induction Days<\/h2>\n
Students will take part in a range of activities designed to help them feel confident, comfortable and prepared for September, including:<\/p>\n

Team-building activities with their new form group.<\/li>\n
Opportunities to get to know their Form Tutor.<\/li>\n
Activities focused on building friendships and developing a sense of belonging within the Haywood community.<\/li>\n
An introduction to key aspects of secondary school life and expectations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Induction Evening – July 2027<\/p>\n
Our Induction Evening is an important opportunity for parents, carers and students to prepare together for the start of Year 7.<\/p>\n
The evening will include:<\/p>\n

A welcome from Mrs Mills (Principal).<\/li>\n
A presentation from Mr Bradshaw (Performance Leader for Year 7).<\/li>\n
An opportunity to meet your child’s Form Tutor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Parents and carers will also receive important information about school routines, expectations and support systems, as well as guidance on completing key administration tasks to help ensure a smooth transition into September.<\/p>\n
This will include information regarding:<\/p>\n

Biometrics consent.<\/li>\n
Free School Meals applications.<\/li>\n
Home-School Agreement documentation.<\/li>\n
Arbor.<\/li>\n
Student support systems.<\/li>\n
The school day and school expectations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns students or parents may have about starting secondary school. We understand that this is a significant step for families, and we want everyone to feel informed, supported and reassured ahead of September.<\/p>\n

Beyond Transition<\/h2>\n
Our transition programme does not end after Induction Day.<\/p>\n
At Haywood Academy, we place great importance on ensuring that students are supported, nurtured and challenged throughout their first year with us. During Year 7, students take part in a range of activities and experiences designed to help them develop confidence, strengthen positive relationships and become fully integrated members of the Haywood community.<\/p>\n
September 2027<\/p>\n
Year 7 students will begin their Haywood journey slightly before the rest of the school, ensuring they have a positive, welcoming and well-supported start to secondary school life.<\/p>\n
During their introduction to Year 7, students will take part in activities including:<\/p>\n
\n
Values-based sessions.<\/li>\n
Orienteering and familiarisation activities around the school site.<\/li>\n
Team-building activities and competitions.<\/li>\n
Opportunities to strengthen relationships with their Form Tutor and peers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
These activities are designed to help students feel confident, settled and ready to make the most of their secondary school experience from day one.<\/p>\n
