Please excuse the cliché, but I became a teacher for the same reason many others do. I wanted a job where I could help people, preferably young people, and academia wasn’t giving me that opportunity. I am proud to say many of my students have gone on to Chemistry and Science-related degrees and one recent City College graduate is waiting for confirmation of his place to study a doctorate.
I feel like school should be about the joy of learning. It is a privilege I want all students to cherish, and never be afraid of the challenges learning presents – learning is a lifelong journey, and I like to think Haywood is a vital stop along the way.
My role consists of providing analysis of data and ensuring the way we report to parents and students is clear and helps people to understand the things they’re brilliant at, and the areas that could make their dreams come true – it’s not everyone’s idea of fun, but it’s hugely important to our students’ success and I enjoy the challenge.
I am often at my happiest, and most relaxed, with hiking boots on at the top of a hill or mountain. Having done Snowden and Scafell a few times, but with Ben Nevis still to visit, I love the sense of achievement when reaching the top, and the chance that follows to sit and take it in.
I also love music. Recent visits to see and hear Muse, Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire and The Chemical Brothers have been highlights that offset my own total lack of musical talent. I often feel sorry for the people standing by me as I sing along!
